Our story

More than fifty years ago, a man named Thafer “Joe” Fahoum left his homeland in the Middle East, where he helped start a family coffee roasting tradition. With courage and hope, he immigrated to the United States, where he married Catherine and raised four children.

Joe and Catherine devoted their lives not only to family but also to their community—supporting education, sports, music, and countless youth programs. Joe was known for his generosity, his love of people, and his belief that every young person deserves an opportunity to succeed.

Today, his daughter and son-in-law carry on Joe’s dream of coffee roasting here in the U.S. since he was unable to realize it in his lifetime.

Every bag you hold continues Joe’s legacy: for each one sold, a percentage goes directly to the Joe Fahoum Scholarship Fund, helping students pursue higher education. With every cup, you’re sharing in a story of family, tradition and the belief that strong communities start with supporting the next generation.

Why an Umbrella ?

We chose the name Umbrella Roasters as a nod to the Pacific Northwest, where the irony is that locals rarely carry umbrellas despite the rain. Beyond that tongue-in-cheek reference, the umbrella serves as a metaphor for the wide canopy of cultures and traditions we embrace—bridging Arabic and American roots, and celebrating the many ways people enjoy coffee, whether it’s Turkish, Arabic, or a classic drip brew. It reflects both where we live and the inclusive, cross-cultural spirit of our coffee.

At Umbrella Roasters, we specialize in great coffee to be enjoyed by all.
